Hobsons Bay was one of the first sites of European settlements in Victoria. Numerous heritage buildings still exist today - Former Truganina Explosives Reserve, Altona Homestead and the Old Laverton Schoolhouse.

The Hobsons Bay City Council was created in 1994 after the amalgamation of several councils. It is situated about 10 kilometres from Melbourne and has over 20 kilometres of bay frontage perfect for families to enjoy not only the beach but also the view into the city and the many parklands and reserves which offer quiet places to sit and relax.

Retail precints are conveniently located including the Pier Street strip which offers cafes and restaurants to enjoy and an easy stroll to the beach.

The area boasts many sporting clubs for kids and adults of all ages as well as numerous playground areas and fitness trails, picnic and barbecue areas and open spaces for families to enjoy.
